CHUMPHON
After years of being covered by the heavy shadow of Koh Tao, Chumphon, the Gateway to Southern Thailand, is finally getting on the map as a major tourist destination as more and more people discover the many interesting things the province has to offer.
Some of the most beautiful beaches of Thailand can be found in Chumphon and if you like diving the Marine Park of the Chumphon Archipelago is probably the single most interesting and still largely unexplored diving area on the East Coast.
If you like other forms of adventure you will find pristine Primary Rain Forest just few kilometers out of the town where trekking tours, white waters rafting, animals and bird watching and other activities are organized.
The town itself is clean, quite and relaxing. There are a few hotels offering very reasonable rooms at very reasonable prices and a few excellent restaurants.
If you are visiting the South of Thailand you should definitely consider spending a few days in Chumphon: it is definitely worth it.
Within a 50 km radius of the town you will find a number of interesting things to see.
Rafting in Patho District is the pet project of the tourist authorities of Chumphon, and you will find tours to there from most of the guesthouses and tourist offices.
Other tours offered are to the caves (mostly to Rab Ro cave, which as a cave is not very interesting, but contains a number of very old Buddha statues) and to the various beaches. Snorkeling tours are also offered almost everywhere.
The trekking tour offered by Oh at the New Chumphon Guesthouse is very popular as are the snorkeling and fishing tours from MT Resort. |
When to go there |
In general Chumphon is blessed with an excellent weather all the year round. April is the hottest month (but still not as hot as in other parts of Thailand) and the rainy season from June to September is mild enough to consent an enjoyable vacation.
There are a few days in a year of heavy uninterrupted rain but they are few indeed and if you visit during the rainy season, a few hours of rain every day help to keep the temperature down a bit. |
Diving: DIVE FAR FROM THE CROWDS
|
40 islands compose Chumphon Marine Park, which have not suffered from heavy diving and offers pristine reefs and abundant marine life.
Most of the area has never been explored; which makes research for wrecks, pinnacles and other dive sites so much exciting.
Whale sharks (in season), a lot of turtles, all the range of tropical fishes, beautiful colorful corals.
Definitively the best diving in the golf of thailand !
